Description

The Dumbbell Nebula (also Apple Core Nebula) was never really on my bucket list for two reasons. On the one hand, it is a very common target because it's a large and bright planetary nebula, well suited for smaller telescopes and beginners. Of course, I also tried to photograph M27 earlier with more or less okayish results. But on the other side, it also is a pretty challenging target because of its bright core and very faint outer shell. Thus I thought it could be too disappointing when I tried to photograph it at f10 in Northern Germany, where we have too few clear nights, and I may end up with a limited dataset.
However, I did not try to photograph a nebula with my EdgeHD 8 yet and thought that M27 would be an excellent target to test this out. The core is bright enough, so even if f10 would be too slow, I at least was awaiting a decent result. And I must say that my expectations were exceeded - with just 4 hours of total integration time, I now look at a result I did not expect. The core was very bright, and I had to bring it down a bit, but even parts of the outer shell are well visible already. Of course, there are much deeper images with much longer exposure times, but this is what you can get within one night and some tweaking in PixInsight and Photoshop. I'm glad I tried this one.

Description: I just learned about the new star-reducing method from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRe7iP4QU1k and tried it on my processed image. It works super nice IMO and thus I had to update the image :-)
